Signs Your BFT Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
- Dead display or no backlight. The keypad has lost power. Usually a failed power supply tap on the control board or a corroded wire nut inside the keypad housing, especially with the humidity swings we get in West University Place. We test for voltage at the keypad terminals before ordering any part.
- Some buttons work, others don’t. Membrane keypads like the PERSEO use a single rubber membrane under the face. When one button fails, moisture or age has compromised the carbon contact. Keypads cannot be economically rebuilt at the button level; the membrane assembly gets replaced.
- Keypad beeps but gate won’t move. The keypad is sending a signal; the board is not acting. - Gate opens on its own or won’t close after keypad use. This one is less common, but we see it on older BFT keypads where a stuck button intermittently shorts the dry contact. The gate sees a valid open command when nobody is there. Replacement keypad fixes it, but we always verify the board programming afterward to make sure no phantom codes remain.

Seven to ten years is typical for a BFT keypad in the Houston climate. The two forces that kill them early are direct afternoon sun on the face and moisture intrusion through a failing gasket. Keypads mounted in shade or inside a covered pillar regularly last past ten years. If yours is over that age, replacement is usually the more honest repair.
Rarely, when the problem is a loose wire or a corroded terminal, we repair it on the spot and leave the keypad in place.
